Chapter Eleven

It took the best part of the rest of the day to get home. What, with Ben finding treasure in the sewer, the police department were distracted. It wasn’t every day you found mounds of gold and gems down the proverbial toilet.

It took Ebony and Nate a while to find a road. After Ebony’s hobbling had slowed them down to a snail’s pace, Nate tugged the shoes off her feet. He still didn’t offer to carry her after he threw them into a bush.

Ebony decided to go straight home rather than back to the police station. Until she knew what was going on, she didn’t want to face Aaron again. Even if she was willing to give him and his handsome face and expensive suit the benefit of the doubt, things didn’t look good for the guy. Especially after Nate had told her that after she’d collapsed the first time they’d gone down the sewers and she’d disturbed some ancient booby trap, Aaron had drawn some kind of symbol on her forehead. Ebony could still remember the powerful pain that had burnt through her skin before the Forms had taken her. She really didn’t think it was a coincidence.

Ben, under Nate’s insistence, told the rest of the office some lie about how Nate and Ebony had found nothing in the sewers and had trundled up a manhole somewhere and gone home. It made Nate and Ebony sound like disinterested and bad detectives, but at least it stopped Aaron from asking after them.

Ebony did what she’d been longing to do for more than a day – she went home and jumped in the shower. The second she had made it through the door was the second Harry started talking.

“Those blighters! Those barbarians! Those fools!” The light in the bathroom flickered wildly as Harry’s voice thundered from it. “I will deal with them. They have gone too far. I’ll go and blast them right where they sit!”

“Harry,” Ebony sighed, “you are a bookstore – you can hardly walk up to the Arlington and blow up their chairs. And I’m not going to take you in your travel case – you’ll get me arrested.”

“Ebony Bell.” The light went out altogether for a moment. “I am a wizard of great power. Never limit me. There are things untold and powers unimagined. And mark my words, I have both.”

Ebony tipped her head back and let the warm, lusciously clear water flow over her. She’d just experienced a trying 24 hours. She just wanted to relax. She might grab a chocolate cake and watch a movie. She might even read a book. But she really didn’t want to go around blasting wizards.

“He put a hole in your head, Ebony, a hole. He stole one of your memories. Don’t you want to blast the little trotter?” The toilet seat waggled up and down.

“Harry, don’t talk from the loo, it’s disgusting,” she pointed out quickly. “And no, I don’t want to blast him. If anything, I want to find out why.
